Throughout my artistic life, which I date to the time I first made a mark with a crayon instead of trying to eat one, my Art has taken many forms.  I have explored linoleum relief printing, collage, found object sculpture, painting of all types, ceramics, and have combined many of these in a series of furniture and game tables.  The First Idea Shape (the name I have given to the round repetitive forms you see in these paintings) has played a big part in all media I have worked with since I was in my early teens.  Having realized this I felt free to let this shape take center stage.  I have explored The First Idea in many ways, varying its placement, color juxtaposition and even in a couple of cases, switching the pebble shape to a brick like one.  Throughout, the influence of nature's repetition of shape and pattern, attention to rhythm, and vibrant color predominate.  Underlying all this I attempt to convey a sense of whimsy, motion, and sometimes a feeling of change yet to come.

Some of the original First Idea paintings remain - others have become the backgrounds for more recent work.  The quest for many layers never ends.

I plan to continue my exploration of the First Idea Shape until it is creatively exhausted.  Even then I know it will pop up as it always has, somewhere in whatever medium I am working.  I also know that it will take the foreground in another form somewhere down the road and what that will be remains locked in my imagination for the present but is exciting to anticipate.  Find what you can in these paintings.  Take those ideas and feelings with you.  Maybe they will enable you to look at something you see everyday in a different light.  Maybe they will inspire you take to take up a brush, pen, crayon, or a piece of clay, to explore your own First Idea, and to find your own Inner Artist.
