Karen La Du >>> The Portraits and The Paper Dolls

The portrait series was begun during the Summer of 2001. Veronica is my muse in the fullest sense of the word. Her beauty both physical and spiritual, and her view of life both comic and serious, have provided the main motivation for all my work since her birth.

The segue of Veronica's image into that of the paper doll was a natural one as the reasons for my work transcend the present and reach into my joyful childhood for inspiration. Their depiction of her has most to do with color (as does all of my work), and less to do with exact replication of her physical features.

The use of some of the original First Idea series and images of Mimser the German Shepard (my loyal companion from 1982 until her death in 1995) ties in well with my need to show the many facets and layers of my life.

As the portrait series continues, other children have become subjects as well.
